Abstract:

These investigations are primarily concerned with the elucidation of effects of the metabolically inert gases helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, and of nitrogen on cellular systems, on the neuromuscular complex, and on intact animals. At this stage of research, it is concluded that metabolically inert gases are endowed with physical properties that bestow on them the ability to interact with a wide variety of biological systems on levels that range from the subcellular to that of the intact higher animal. A better understanding of the nature of these molecular interactions is sought in order to be able to anticipate the physiological effects of metabolically inert gases under unusual environmental circumstances.
