Measurements of the vertical distribution of dust in the atmosphere suggest the presence of particulate matter in sufficient quantities to affect the ion concentration. A project was initiated in September 1962 to measure the total ambient aerosol concentration in the stratosphere and the associated size distribution. The variations of atmospheric ozone with altitude, the seasons, over a period of days and even over a period of several hours was studied. The data included in this report was collected from August 1962 to September 1963. On many of the flights both ascent and descent measurements were obtained, thus permitting the study of ozone variation which may occur within the period of several hours.
