Abstract:

This report summarizes research on speech analysis and synthesis during the period October 1, 1959 to September 30, 1963. The introduction of the report gives a general outline of the problems that were studies and indicates that the emphasis was on the search for the generative rules governing the production of speech. The work on speech synthesis included the modification and improvement of an existing electrical analog of the vocal tract and the design of a new synthesizer with improved capabilities. Experiments on the generation of several classes of speech sounds were carried out with the existing synthesizers. Techniques of reduction of speech spectra were developed, based on an analysis-by-synthesis approach. The properties of limited classes of natural speech events were studied both through acoustic analysis of the spectra and through direct examination of the articulatory processes. In the latter case both high-speed photography and cineradiographic techniques have been exploited. In addition, experimental investigations relating to the perception of speech and speechlike sounds have been carried out. Authorx
