Abstract:

The problem of the reflection of ruby laser pulses from artificial targets is investigated. The parameters of intensity distribution over the cross-section of a laser beam in the 0.5 to 3 joule energy range and the time history of this intensity within one pulse in the 12 to 1 millisecond duration range are measured and evaluated in different distances from the ruby rod up to 75 meters. Reflection characteristics for different standard geometrical bodies and different standard surface materials are derived experimentally and theoretically for incoherent white illumination and are compared with laser illumination. The change of time history of a single pulse after reflection from the target, due to the targets shape, is studied. This change when compared with the undistorted pulse from the rear of the ruby permits conclusions about the shape of the target. Author
