Abstract:

With the goal of producing a stable, nonmigrating ferrocene burn rate modifier, four ferrocene diols were examined in the role of curing agents. 1,1- bishydroxymethylferrocene and 1,1-bisalpha-hydroxyethyl-ferrocene were eliminated because of poor physical properties in the gumstocks and propellants obtained from them. 1,1-bisgamma-hydroxypropylferrocene BHPF and 1,1- bisdelta-hydroxybutylferrocene BHBF, however, were both found to be excellent curing agents. Both BHPF and BHBF gave well-cured gumstocks and propellants with the propellant physical properties ranging from 63 to 110 psi tensile strength and 9 to 21 elongation. The propellants contained the equivalent of 1.7 to 3.0 NBF, but in a form which could not migrate or crystallize. Burn rate comparisons were made over a range from 0.6 to 1.0 in.s at 1000 psi.
