Abstract:
The purpose of the study reported herein was the determination of the approximate magnitude of the residual stresses in tubes of AISI 1040 and 8630 steel as cold worked and the optimum temperature for relieving them. Thermal stress relief treatments consisting of heating the 1040 tubes at 900 F for two hours and air cooling, and heating the 8630 tubes for two hours at 1000 F and air cooling, were found to eliminate a large portion of the residual stresses without sacrificing the hardness induced by the cold work.
