Abstract:

Tetranitroethane is unusually rich in oxygen, but is too unstable for consideration as a high explosive ingredient. The work reported here is an exploration of the chemical reactions of this substance undertaken in the hope of preparing a stable and potent high explosive derivative from it. No such derivative was found. No reaction or decomposition occurred on attempts at reaction with formaldehyde, acrolein, p-nitrobenzyl bromide, methyl iodide, dimethyl sulfate, 2-bromo - and 2-iodo-2-nitropropane and acylating reagents. Reaction may have occurred with acrylonitrile, but no product was isolated. Author
