Influence of Ductility on the Response of Simple Structures to Earthquake Motions.

An estimate is made of the influence of ductility on the ability of steel frame mill buildings to withstand earthquake motions. It appears that the energy dissipation which accompanies ductile action serves to reduce the peak stresses markedly. Ductility also lessens the differences in peak response to random base motions for buildings of this class having nearly the same natural frequencies.
