Abstract:
This test was conducted to obtain the fragmentation characteristics of 8 in. diameter, 12 in. long rod-expelling warheads Nos. 125 and 125B. Warhead No. 125 is designed to produce full length 12 in. rods and Warhead No. 125B is designed to produce 3 circumferential rows of 4 in. long rods. Eight in. diameter Warhead No. 125 having either a 2-18 in. or a 1-58 in. explosive annulus produced rod-like fragments generally 9 in. to 12 in. in length with average velocities of 4500 ft.sec. and 4170 ft.sec. respectively. The warheads which were more fully loaded, 2-58 in. explosive annulus, produced rod-like fragments which were 5 in. to 10 in. in length with average velocities of 5040 ft.sec. Eight in. diameter Warhead No. 125B produced 3 circumferential rows of rod-like fragments. Two of the 3 rows had 4 in. length fragments and the other, upper, row had fragments varying in length from 1 in. to 3 in. The average fragment velocity was 5140 ft.sec. Author
