Abstract:

This test was conducted to determine the fragmentation characteristics of Composition C-3 loaded rod expelling warheads Naval Ordnance Laboratory Model 112, which were constructed from 12 in. boiler plate, hot grooved formed into half cylinders, and welded into cylinders 4.5 in. diameter, 12 in. long, with a major wall thickness of 716 in. Although the warheads broke along the grooves, as was intended, the rods thus produced broke transversely. The fragments of rods varied from 12 in. to 6 in. in length, and had an average median velocity of 4830 fs. Author
