Abstract:

The first section of this report concerns the conclusion of some work which was started during the first quarter of the contract period. Studies were made of the effects on battery performance caused by variation of cuprous chloride concentration and variation of separator thickness. These studies were concluded during this interval, and the results are given in this report. Also included are results on battery shelf life tests and a report on an experiment with a pile type battery constructed with copper plated magnesium plates. The specifications for the meteorological battery to be developed under this contract were changed during this interval, and the revised specifications are summarized. The second part of this report deals with the development of a battery to meet these revised specifications using a pile type construction. Several possible types of construction were discussed in the first quarterly report and one of these was selected as being the most practical and economical. A report on the step by step development of a battery using this type of construction is given. Author
