Oscillograms of electrode currents were taken and visual observations were made on several 715B tubes under arcing conditions in order to locate the causes of the two general types of arcs described herein. The results of tests on two tubes are given. The thermionic emission from clean 18-8 stainless steel was studied preliminary to study of its emission when contaminated by the material evaporated from an oxide cathode. Of the possible grid materials investigated thus far, when compared on a basis of emission for a given power input carbonized nickel is the best, with zirconium-clad molybdenum and gold-plated molybdenum following in that order.
