Abstract:

This instrument is based on an application of correlation methods to the analysis of complex acoustic signals. The noise analyzer is designed to determine, at some point in the sound field, the fraction of total ship noise contributed by a given machine or sound source on board the ship. A major component of the noise from the machine under test is selected by the narrow-band analyzer and is correlated with the total noise from the ship. The theory of operation is discussed, and limitations of the instrument are pointed out. Machinery noise was measured in an echoic room the agreement of these results with calculated values is shown. Data from tests on an actual ship are also given. The basic theory was shown to be sound, but additional field measurements are required to determine the value of the instrument. Circuit diagrams are included. Author
