Abstract:

The development of a method for recovering certain items intact from a reconnaissance satellite is investigated. The investigation of recovery of a satellite payload was contingent upon three conditions The trajectory of the orbiting pay load must be modified so that it will intersect the earths surface at a specified time and location. Payload items must be protected from aerodynamic heating during re-entry into the earths atmosphere. The payload must be located and retrieved promptly after it impacts.
