Abstract:

Five pounds of PODZ-IT fiber, prepared by the benzene sulfonic acid-catalyzed cyclodehydration of O-I-O-T fiber, have been produced with TEMi - 6.76.243 yarn and TEMi -8.010227 fiber. The excellent chemical and thermal durability of this poly-1,3,4-oxadiazole fiber, previously reported, has been confirmed, as has the deficiencies of low U.V durability and flammability. Copoly1,3,4-thiadiazole-hydrazide, copolyp-phenylene-2,5-1, 3,4-thiadiazole-p-phenyl-hydrazide-m-phenylene-hydrazide, PTSDZTOIO, has been prepared and dry spun into fibers with TEMi of 1.047238. Thermal conversion to PODZ-PSDZ fiber gave maximum tensile properties of TEMi -0.862.146. The TGAs for PTSDZTOIO and PODZ-PSDZ were found to be very similar to O-I andor OIOT and PODZ-I andor PODZ-IT and the PODZ-PSDZ about of equal flammability to PODZ-IT fiber. Author
