Abstract:

Means for expediting canal crossings of mechanized rifle M-113 and armored cavalry M-114 troops are presented. This is particularly applicable in the Mekong River Delta where muddy-bottomed, steep-banked, swift-current canals have caused loss of operational momentum and, occasionally, have completely terminated the operation. Several effective techniques of expediting canal crossings and vehicle recovery have been developed. The methods studied included the following capstan-anchor, push bar, balk aluminum bridging, push method, employment of demolition, brush fill, towing, block and tackle waterborne, block and tackle landborne, log bearings, and S hook.
