This work was undertaken to demonstrate the feasibility of fabrication and the performance of a Type VII extra-high-pressure aircraft tire fabricated with continuous filament reinforcements wrapped in a toroidal configuration. A filament-wound carcass is wrapped around a soluble plaster mandrel with nylon cord and rubber squeegee plies in a specific pattern. The chafer plies, sidewall, and tread stock are applied by conventional tire building methods. The mandrel is then dissolved and the tire is cured in a standard curing mold. Presented are the design and fabrication procedures for a 30 x 7.7, 12-ply-rating tire, containing a rim-locking device to prevent tire roll-off. Ten prototype tires were fabricated. Two tires were tested to the requirements of Specification MIL-T-5041D, and one successfully passed 25 dynamometer landings at 200 mph. Tread failures occurred on each of the two tires. However, the carcasses maintained pressure and did not slip on the test wheel. Detailed test results are presented and compared with data obtained from a standard tire of the same type.
