Efforts to develop a 12.5 kW traveling-wave tube covering the range 7.7 to 8.4 GHz are described. The tube is designed for use in SATCOM ground stations. Efforts were directed towards solving two tube performance problems oscillations, and low power at the end of the band. The simplest way to stop oscillation is to raise the lower cutoff frequency of the two-cavity section above waveguide cutoff, thereby reducing feedback in the section. This was accomplished by changing the coupling slot angle to 120 degrees. To further attack the problem of low power at the low end of the band, a change in the output section of Tube 46 was made. This change consisted of a reduction in the cavity diameters by about 2 percent, thus raising the frequency band, and reducing the period by 9 percent. The result of these changes was to optimize performance at 19.5 kV with higher power at the lower end of the required operating band. With these changes Tube 46 was able to meet the general goals of this program, namely 12.5 kW power output from 7.7 to 8.4 GHz with 35 percent efficiency, and to operate stably. The life test portion of the program has also been completed with Tubes 35 and 38 finishing life test.
