Abstract:

The conditions required for general laminar space-charge flow have been investigated and the results compared with the special Brillouin flow results. The conditions in the cathode region have been shown to be critical in determining the characteristics of the space-charge flow. Variations in the initial velocity of an electron indicated that the radial emission velocity had little effect on the trajectory but changes in the tangential components created significant differences in the electron motion. The digital computer space-charge flow program indicated the need for a finer matrix subdivision in the cathode region. The Monte Carlo simulation program is being developed for the random emission process to be used in the analysis of the noise characteristics of the MIG. Experimental investigations of an 8 degree cathode MIG indicated that constant thickness, quasi-laminar, nonundulating hollow electron beam was formed with the inner diameter approximately equal to the front diameter of the cathode. The emission from various portions of the cathode could be enhanced or suppressed by varying the voltages on the appropriate accelerator electrodes. Author
