Abstract:
This report presents general information on a pulse system developed for measurements of sediment sound speed in cored ocean bottom sediments. The sediment velocimeter is designed to be a compact portable system that is simple to operate and capable of making sound speed measurements with minimum disturbance to a core. Two modes of operation are possible. Continuous measurements can be made across the diameter of a 10 foot length of core with an uncorrected accuracy of about or - 0.5 or measurements can be made along the length of a 1 to 10 inch sediment sample with an uncorrected accuracy of about or - 0.2.
