Abstract:

An experimental model of a microminiaturized modem was built and tested. The model was designed to demonstrate the technical soundness of miniaturization techniques using off-the-shelf circuits. The final model is a full-duplex, four-tone modem capable of accepting serial data inputs at either 1200 or 2400 bits per second. Data rate selection is either through front-panel controls or through a remote switching system. Miniaturization was achieved by the use of integrated circuits for digital functions and hybrid thin-film techniques for linear functions. The miniature components are mounted on plug-in circuit boards. In general, the microminiaturized modem operates as follows Serial-data inputs are accepted by the transmitter at the selected rate, converted into parallel channels, separately coded and modulated onto subcarriers in a 3-KC audio bandwith, and applied to transmission facilities as a four-tone composite signal. A four-tone composite signal is accepted by the receiver at the selected rate, demodulated and decoded as parallel channels, converted into a serial data stream, and applied to peripheral readout or storage equipment. The modem was successfully tested for performance and compatibility requirements.
