Simulated Martian environment permitted survival of endospores of Bacillus cereus but not the photosynthetic nitrogen-fixing soil bacterium, Rhodospirillum rubrium. There was no evidence of a synergistic relationship. Observed increases in colony counts of B. cereus appeared due to temperature cycling.
