Abstract:

The resistive instability known as the Kadomtsev current-convective instability has been studied experimentally to verify the theoretical analysis. According to the theory, damping of the wave should be modified by the addition of a term, the sign of which depends upon the sign of the azimuthal wave number m. Data have been taken to determine the dependence of this term upon electric current dennsity, wave frequency, resistivity gradient, and azimuthal wave number. In all instances the experimental observations are in agreement with theoretical prediction. In particular it was observed that the azimuthal wave number of the enhanced wave changed sign when the resistivity gradient changed sign. This implies that the interaction is an effect of the resistivity gradient, and not some other phenomenon. Author
