Previous HumRRO research in the area of maintenance of complex weapon systems has tended to concentrate on fire control system maintenance. Research orientation has provided research coverage of missile maintenance per se or of maintenance problems where several different MOSs share the maintenance responsibility for an entire system or a large portion of one system. This study should be regarded as the first step in providing such coverage and is intended to provide further insights into the general problems of maintenance training. The NIKE AJAX missile and the battery level personnel who maintain it and its associated equipment were selected as research vehicles. It was expected that information could be provided that would be helpful with respect to the following problem areas The evaluation and modification of training for personnel who maintain the NIKE AJAX missile The allocation of personnel to the several aspects of NIKE AJAX missile maintenance and The development of procedures for more effective maintenance and maintenance training for complex weapon systems in general.
