Aluminum oxyfluorides ranging from AlOF to Al2OF4 have been prepared by reacting aluminum oxybromide with bromine trifluoride at room temperature, then heating the initially formed product at 350 degrees in vacuo. These aluminum oxyfluorides are sparingly soluble in water. They can be readily converted to the corresponding basic fluorides boiling aqueous suspensions of the oxyfluorides. AlOF decomposes readily at 1350 C to AlF3 and Al2O3. Unsuccessful attempts to prepare AlOF from Al2O3 and AlF3 and from B2O3 and AlF3, as well as from an aluminum alkoxide and HF, are described. The aluminum alkoxide reaction leads to the formation of AlF2OH, which decomposes at 800 C to AlF3, AlOOH, and HF. Author
