The concentration of impurity varies in crystals grown by many techniques. This variation in composition introduces strain into the crystal, because of the dependence of lattice constants on composition. This strain energy causes the impurity distribution coefficient between crystal and fluid to depart from the equilibrium value. Theoretical expressions for the distribution coefficient for several situations of this type are derived in this paper. It is suggested that such an effect may provide explanations for several crystal growth phenomena. Author
