A model for the propagation of a plane crack in an elastic body subjected to a uniform tensile loading normal to the plane containing the crack is developed. The nonlinear atomic force-separation law is used in representing the rupture of the cohesive forces at the crack tip. The sequence of loadings which must be applied to extend the crack together with the shape of the crack tip and the distribution of the cohesive forces at the crack tip for each loading are determined. A general solution for a simi-infinite elastic body completely supported by linear springs is also developed. Author
