This report covers PHASE I of this study which was a test evaluation of 14 Silicon Carbide diodes grown junction furnished by the Air Force. Near the end of the program, 12 diffused junction diodes with low peak inverse volts were also provided. The test program consisted of environmental, rotational, and spike voltage tests. During the tests, eight grown junction diodes failed. Four diodes passed rotation tests at 10,000 rpm, and one inch radius. The following was concluded Although the diodes were weak in some environmental tests, successful results of rotation and spike tests showed that it is feasible to build a rotating rectifier for the PHASE II alternator. It is recommended that the study proceed to the layout drawing of the PHASE II alternator. A go-ahead at that time would depend on procurement of at least 12 diodes designed specifically for the PHASE II alternator. Author
