Abstract:
The reference tankage structure was redesigned to incorporate a standard panel configuration to maximize the cost-effectiveness of roll diffusion bonded sandwich material. Conversion of this sandwich panel from laboratory to production techniques configuration was verified, through the fabrication of six process development panels. The first two panels were 4 by 5 feet and incorporated both the continuous corrugated core and strip core configuration, for relative cost and quality evaluation. The evaluation indicated the preference of the strip core configuration, and two additional 4 by 5-foot panels and two 4 by 7-12-foot panels were fabricated to verify the process. Controlled defects were incorporated in one pack, for evaluation uof quality assurance techniques. The quality of bonding and dimensional control on the developmental packs was excellent. Procedures for forming and weld joining the sandwich panels, quality control procedures, and quality assurance techniques for the fabrication of the sandwich panels and the tankage structure have been established.
