The general objectives of this program are 1 to study the effect of the various laser operating parameters on efficiency and output power and to find the optimum values of those parameters 2 to make the measurements necessary for a more complete understanding of the internal mechanisms at work and, if possible, to achieve improvements in the efficiency of operation as a result of those measurements. A parametric study of argon arc ion lasers is being carried out to satisfy the first objective. The results thus far obtained from a study of discharge tubes of 8, 5, 4, and 3 mm diameter are reported. The effect of magnetic field on the discharge and on the laser output is explored. Experiments using segmented metal bore tube which have yielded information on the problem of bore damage in the vicinity of the discharge constriction are discussed. Experiments on the rf-excited ring discharge are reported.
