Previously derived formulation for the evaluation of thermal shock of ceramic materials is reviewed and evaluated in terms of materials properties and aerospace requirements. In the attempt to improve resistance to thermal shock, developmental approaches have usually been an attempt to increase strength or to decrease stored elastic energy. The present work describes a new approach based upon the assumption that the thermal stress conditions will be too severe to prevent cracking. This approach provides a high flaw density by which released elastic strain energy is absorbed by dispersion along secondary cracks. Author
