Abstract:
Based on available information, the concept of extra-wide tires has been essentially limited to the Rolligon and Terra-Tire concepts. Analytical results predict that a wide tire in comparison with tires of conventional geometry, will show equivalent or slightly less sinkage in 4 of the 5 soils examined. In general, higher rolling resistances are predicted for wide tires, expecially on soils of CBR 3 and below, principally because of a greater bulldozing rolling resistance component. Slightly higher rolling resistances are predicted for CBR 3-6 soils. Limited testing of multi-chambered model tires show that running multiple four conventional tires, stacked adjacent to each other, does not visibly damage the tires. As measured by soil disturbance comparisons, ground flotation of a wide tire concept based on multiple, stacked, essentially conventional tires appears to show promise in comparison with a conventional spaced tire system, and with a single tire of equivalent load capacity.
