Abstract:
The development of a turbopump gearbox lubricant for the Titan II family engines was undertaken to formulate a new lubricant. Naphthenic mineral oil was selected for the base because it has excellent storage life and propellant compatibility. Several additives were admixed to provide oxidation stability, good aeration characteristics, and a high load-carrying capacity. Specifications covering all the particulars of this new lubricant have been written and are attached to this report. The development program encompassed the following tasks selection of basic candidates, optimization of additives, selection of final candidate lubricant.
