Abstract:

Ground-based determination of the temperature distribution of the troposphere from microwave measurements of oxygen emission spectra is discussed. Microwave absorption by oxygen and water vapor is reviewed, and least-squares determination of line-width parameters from absorption data is presented. Brightness temperature calculations from perturbed temperature profiles are given to show frequency regions of maximum sensitivity to temperature profiles. Least-squares inversion by low order polynomials is presented for several types of temperature profiles. Inversion by inversequadrature using a modified method of Twomey is discussed. Finally, calculations of brightness temperatures in the vicinity of the 183 Gcs water vapor line are presented. Author
