Abstract:

The objectives of this experiment were to establish the feasibility of hypervelocity impact fuzing using piezoelectric transducers and to develop a relatively inexpensive and controlled means of evaluating and testing hypervelocity impact fuze systems, at hypersonic speeds of 6600 fps and above, in a full-scale or near full-scale simulated reentry vehicle. To meet the objectives, Air Force Missile Development Center AFMDC developed a Mach 6 sled capable of carrying a 100-lb payload to impact. An instrumentation system that would monitor within the nose cone the arrival and propagation time of the precursor shock wave upon impact was developed at the Air Force Weapons Laboratory AFWL.
