Abstract:
A coherent optical radar receiver requires an image detector with extremely wide bandwidth because of the large Doppler frequency shift at the optical wavelength due to moving targets. The objective of this program was to develop a wide bandwidth image dissector with internal current multiplication and to demonstrate the operation of this device in a breadboard receiver. The high-frequency image dissector was to be operated in a tracking mode with a storage camera to be used as the acquisition sensor. An extremely fast secondary electron multiplier of the crossed electric and magnetic field design was developed for use with an image dissector electron gun. The complete device was tested at modulation rates as high as 2.47 Gc with excellent sensitivity. When operated in a scanning mode, the device was able to demodulate microwave-modulated light sources at any arbitrary position in the field of view. The most significant result was the large bandwidth which was obtained in an image detector with internal current gain. The high-frequency image dissector was operated in a tracking mode utilizing a vidicon camera as the acquisition sensor.
