The time and cost required for development of integral circuits can be greatly reduced by applying modern techniques of computer-aided design. In the planned manmachine system, the designer will rapidly construct mask layouts by interacting with a high-speed digital computer via a cathode-ray tube display. The present prototype system simulates this action through plotted displays and a symbolic language. The design language uses a problem-oriented vocabulary of commands MOVE, BEND, MOAT, etc. in an easily learned English-like syntax. A set of symbolic expressions enables the designer to place components precisely without concerning himself with actual dimensions and tolerances. The computer automatically obeys built-in rules to insure consistency with the selected fabrication processes. Operation of the prototype system was tested by the analysis and layout of a new type of microelectronic IF amplifier. The circuit was then manufactured in a single fabrication run, and exhibited excellent performance. Included herein are detailed instructions for the solid state device designer for use of the prototype system.
