Abstract:

The solubility relationships were determined between several axial and planar hexagonal ferrites and a number of oxide solvent materials used in ferrite single crystal growth. Large single crystals 2cc of barium ferrites H 17,000Oe and barium ferrite with Al and with Co and Ti substituting for Fe were grown from NaFeO2 by conventional slow cooling 1.5 C per hr of melts contained in platinum crucibles. Planar single crystals of ZnMnY were grown principally from barium borate 2BaO-B2O3 solvent compositions by slow cooling of melts with and without seeding and seed rotation techniques. Seeding without rotation holds no advantage over the uncontrolled nucleation in conventional solvent growth, but seed rotation results in single crystals one to two orders of magnitude larger. Planar ferrite single crystals up to 15 grams have been produced during this contract. Author
