Abstract:
Analyzing the procedure of the Enskog-Chapman method deriving the Navier-Stokes equation, the criterion is obtained of the validity of the Navier-Stokes equation. It is shown that the Knudsen number constitutes a part of the criterion. In view of the criterion, flow regimes are proposed to be redefined. The conditions of the applicability of the Navier-Stokes equation to shock wave and Couette flow are studied in view of the above criterion. It is suggested that there is a possibility of revision of the slip flow theory by which the application of the Navier-Stokes equation becomes more radical in some rarefied gas flows. Author
