The purpose of this experimental program is to develop technology sufficient to construct batteries based on the lithium-cupric fluoride or lithium-cobaltic fluoride electrochemical couples. Tests during this period showed that sustained discharges with a voltage plateau are not obtained with present technology at current densities as low as 0.32 ma sq. in. with cobalt fluoride electrodes. Short time 16 hr tests with anodes prepared from strip Li or Li dispersions showed polarization in both cases of less than 100 microns at current density of 10 masq. in. Cells with cupric fluoride cathodes prepared by a filter cake technique and filled with LiClO4-propylene carbonate electrolyte were discharged over 100 hr at a current density of 1.5 masq. in. and with a cell voltage of over 3.0 V. Sealed Al cased cells were constructed and discharged. One cell delivered 57 W-hrlb at 3.0 V average cell potential. Author
