Abstract:

This report gives new data on molecular bands related to the opacity of air. Experimental work covering the 0.2 to 2.0 micron region and employing radiative lifetime measurements yielded new or confirmatory numbers on several band systems. Other systems explored are discussed. Cascading and resulting interference with deduction of single spontaneous decays, both from the experimental and mathematical aspects, are treated. From the lifetime results oscillator strengths f-numbers and electronic transition moments and transition probabilities were deduced. A critical review and compilation of the various formulations for these quantities are presented and recommendations for consistent definitions are urged. Considerable attention was paid to the moment variation over a given band system. Extensive computations employing new machine programs produced new or extended matrices of Franck-Condon factors and r-centroids. Some Morse and RKR potential comparisons are given. Another major machine code for calculation of the transition moment variation is described. Author
