Abstract:

Magnetic total intensity data in the vicinity of the Puerto Rico trench and the outer ridge are presented. The magnetic field over the trench is unusually smooth and does not show the effect of local sources. A seventh-degree orthogonal polynomial was removed from along the survey lines to reduce the effects of both low-frequency magnetic time variations and the regional gradient of the main field of the earth. The residuals obtained in this way exhibit a predominant northwest-southeast trend, across the outer ridge and into the trench, which parallels the trend of the Bahama Islands. Author
