Abstract:

An investigation of the feasibility of the FORMAT digital computer program is reported. FORMAT is a high level abstraction program that provides for direct programming of large order matrix and vector operations. Using FORMAT, an engineer can easily write major programs directly in the language of modern methods for analysis of static and dynamic behavior of structures. Investigation of the feasibility of FORMAT included identification of the scope of applications, programming pilot versions of FORMAT, and evaluation of the pilot programs. Fifteen existing matrix methods in five technologies are identified as suitable applications. It is concluded that FORMAT is feasible and should be developed, and that all programming should be in Fortran 4. Author
