Abstract:
The broad aspects of the problems involved in the structural use of brittle materials were considered and areas which most strongly influence selection of such materials were investigated. A direct evaluation technique was developed for sonic leading edge applications. A rational design philosophy was formulated and applied to the design of simple structural elements and leading edge configurations for which analytical strength predictions were in good agreement with experimental results. Characterization studies of observable material characteristics permitted the assessment of similarity of material produced at different times and in different configurations. Correlations of these observables with strength formed the basis for material selectivity which, along with proof testing, was shown to have great potential for reducing variability of material strength and thus providing increased design allowables for existing materials. A process for the manufacture of complex Boride Z leading edge segments was established. Author
