Abstract:
The initial object of the project was to develop solar absorber coatings stable up to 1000 C in a vacuum of 0.000001 torr with solar absorptance of 0.9 and emittance of 0.1 at 1000 C. During this year the high temperature goal was relaxed somewhat in favor of better optical properties. Several excellent coatings were prepared using multiple metal and dielectric films to produce optical interference in the solar spectrum on a reflective substrate. A MgF2-Mo-CeO2 on Mo system was prepared with a solar absorptance of 0.85 and an emittance of 0.06 at 1000 F. This coating was very space-stable up to 1250 F. UV stability tests indicated no detectable deterioration with a 50 sun intensity over a 100 hr period. Theoretical analysis using a widely applicable computer program was useful in designing the coating systems. The solar absorptance of these coatings was found to vary only slightly from an incident angle normal to the surface to 50 degrees off normal. Author
