Abstract:
The quality assurance program instituted by the Bureau of Ships in 1960 is intended to reduce the probability of material defects and failures in the ships constructed, overhauled, and repaired in our Naval and private shipyards. Particular emphasis is given to critical ship systems and to critical industrial processes which could affect the safety or the mission capabilities of the ships. This paper represents a review of the quality assurance program as it now exists in the Naval shipyards under the direction and guidance of the Bureau of Ships. The principal elements of the program are discussed. Those areas of the program which appear to need further attention are cited. Author
