Elementary concepts of detonation theory are discussed primarily in the classical context. An illustration of the essential non-linearity of the equations is given. Several assumptions utilized in current theories are discussed and experiments designed to evaluate the validity of these are described. All discussion is from a continuum point of view. Information related to the use of explosives as energy sources for magnetohydrodynamic energy conversion is given. Instrumentation used in the experiments is discussed. Author
