This report covers a development of a thin film thermistor to be used for sensing atmospheric temperature up to 200,000 feet altitude and higher. The thermistor developed is approximately 1000 A thick with 1000 A conductors, both sputtered films on 17,000 A plastic substrate. Testing of preliminary foam substrates and soluble substrates is described. Methods of measuringtime constants of film and its mount, and error caused by conduction to the mount are discussed. Selected test is a comparison between the film thermistor and a 14-mil bead thermistor in response to a step-change in temperature at 150 microns pressure 200,000 feet and zero velocity. Film response is an order of magnitude faster than bead response. Improvement over bead increases with altitude. Also reported is testing of dissipation constant, RF and IR heating and temperature sensitivity. Author
