Abstract:
An experimental and analytical evaluation of the theory and computer programs concerning heat transfer through semitransparent materials which was developed uncer Contract AF 33657-9138. Experimental investigations of the heat transfer through 96 silica glass and aluminosilicate glass were conducted for glaze temperatures to 1000 F. Similar data were produced for the same materials with tin oxide or gold films on one or both sides of the specimens. The experimental, empirical, and analytical tests conducted to evaluate the computer program led to the conclusion that the program in its present form does not yield realistic results and thus is not a satisfactory tool for the computation of heat fluxes or temperature distributions in semitransparent materials. Recommendations for future research are based upon a belief that the theory is sound and that, despite the computer program difficulties, the program can be made into an important tool for the design of advanced systems.
