This report primarily covers the development testing of a constant-receiver-pressure launching system and a rotary retraction engine. The rotary engine tests were suspended prematurely because it was severely damaged when a launching was made with the grab attached. Testing completed prior to the accident indicated that the major problem area was excessive hydraulic pressure during retract braking. The constantreceiver-pressure tests included 1 A deadload calibration, 2 A study of the effects of varying hydraulic pressure, 3 A study of the effect of launching-valve tolerances, 4 Asimulation of sealing-strip failure, and 5 Suitability tests of a hydraulic fluid strainer.
